Who can apply?
The 2017 Flies Collective Film Grant is open to talented and promising filmmakers with bold visions who are looking for funding to get their projects off the ground. The grant is not limited to a specific type of film or filmmaker, but is open to to all - both established filmmakers and new voices in the filmmaking community.
What are you looking for?
We know how expensive even the most modest film can be, but we also know how to make a small budget last. This grant should not be considered gap financing. We are looking for low budget projects with a demonstrable need for funding that will allow production to happen. For this reason, we expect the majority of submissions to be short films, but micro-budget features are absolutely encouraged to apply.
How much is the grant worth?
In 2017, we will be awarding a total of $10,000, either to one project or divided up across several projects. We are also offering the use of an equipment package to eligible films. If you are interested in being considered for the equipment package as well, please make sure you check the box on the application indicating so. Please note that if you are interested in the equipment, you will need to provide proof of production insurance beforehand.
What do you need from me?
The first step is filling out our online application, which asks for some details about you and your project. If your project speaks to us, we will reach out at the end of the submission period (April 10-June 1) with an additional round of questions. Grant recipients will be notified of their selection at the beginning of July.
If selected, grant recipients will need to have a US-based fiscal sponsor (i.e. Fractured Atlas, IFP, International Documentary Association, etc.) in order to receive the grant funds. For more information about fiscal sponsorship, please visit the following sites:
Fractured AtlasIndependent Filmmaker Project (IFP)International Documentary Association
Can International Projects Apply?
Yes! We welcome projects from outside the United States. However, as noted above, you will need to have a US-based fiscal sponsor. There is some additional paperwork that you will have to fill out in order to obtain fiscal sponsorship as an international person or company. Please note that all funding is subject to IRS withholdings, even if you are not a US citizen. We suggest you contact the fiscal sponsorship organizations listed above directly to inquire about your project and to discuss any IRS requirements specific to your situation.
What is the timeline for applications and selection?
The application is open from April 10 to June 1, 2017. We will begin reviewing applications shortly after the deadline and will reach out to finalists with additional questions in mid June. We will review and select grantees in early July.
Why are you funding films?
We're indebted to the support we've gotten from our community of fellow filmmakers. We want to pay that support forward and help deserving storytellers get their new projects off the ground.
