Who can apply?

The 2019 Flies Collective Film Grant is open to all filmmakers in need of funding for their new projects. The grant is not limited to a specific type of film or filmmaker, but is open to to all - both established filmmakers and new voices in the filmmaking community. Any and all film/video projects at any stage are eligible: feature, short, narrative, doc, hybrid, experimental, etc.

What are you looking for?

Filmmaking is expensive. But we also believe that stretching a small budget can yield the most exciting creative choices. For this reason, we expect the majority of submissions to be short films, docs and low-budget features. In short, we are looking for talented filmmakers with bold voices and passion projects that have a demonstrable need for funds.

I have a couple of projects in the works. Can I apply for more than one project?

Yes! You can apply for multiple projects. Note that you are only able to have one draft submission on our platform at a time, so you will need to complete and submit one application before you can start the next.

How much is the grant worth?

Over the past two years, we’ve awarded over $30,000 in financial and other support to nine great projects. In 2019, we will be awarding a total of $15,000 — either to one project or spread across several projects. We are also offering the use of an equipment package to eligible films. If you are interested in being considered for the equipment package in additional to financial support, please make sure you check the box on the application indicating your interest. Please note that if you are interested in the equipment, you will need to provide proof of production insurance.

What do you need from me?

The first step is filling out our online application via Submittable. The application asks for some preliminary information about you and your project, including budget, timeline, cast & crew, previous work, etc.

If selected, grant recipients will need to have a US-based fiscal sponsor (i.e. Fractured Atlas, IFP,  International Documentary Association, etc.) in order to receive the grant funds. For more information about fiscal sponsorship and how to get set up with a fiscal sponsor, please visit the following sites:

Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP)
International Documentary Association

Can International Projects Apply?

Yes! We welcome projects from outside the United States. However, as noted above, you will need to have a US-based fiscal sponsor. There is some additional paperwork that you will have to fill out in order to obtain fiscal sponsorship as an international person or company. Please note that all funding is subject to IRS withholdings, even if you are not a US citizen. We suggest you contact the fiscal sponsorship organizations listed above directly to inquire about your project and to discuss any IRS requirements specific to your situation.

What is the timeline for applications and selection?

The application is open May 1 to May 31 (11:59pm) 2019. Our team of reviewers will begin reviewing all applications after the submission deadline in early June. If your project speaks to us, we will reach out in July with additional questions and may ask for some additional materials. Grant recipients will be notified of their selection in mid-to-late August.

Why are you funding films?

We're indebted to the support we've gotten from our community of fellow filmmakers. We want to pay that support forward and help deserving storytellers get their new projects off the ground.
